Editorial sketch

For my editorial design I decided to focus on an image that would go into a music magazine as I can't imagine Agnes Obel in a normal or fashion magazine as her music is more instrumental based rather than image based. For this I thought I should include her instruments and I wanted to link them to the album cover and poster so I decided to include the same style leaves swirling around them.

I drew a violin as they play a predominant part in most of her music and added the leaves around it. I will work over this image to refine it and when I have decided on colours I will proceed to colour the image. This is the sketch that I have at the moment.

Idea development

I started to develop my concept based off the Folk tale of Huldra. I began just drawing women curled up in a ball as if the woman is trying to hide herself from the world. I then began to decide how I want to draw the tale as it is hard to position it naturally. I decided to make the base of the tale look like cow print on the skin because it looked strange otherwise. Here are my starting point sketches. I was also trying out a technique of colouring the image using crayon, I didn't really like how this turned out so when I develop my image further I will try out a different medium to colour it.

Development sketches
Although I like the body position of the coloured sketch more the image below is my favourite sketch so far, I think its because I like the face being visible. I will now take this drawing and develop it further and see what happens.

Favourite sketch

I also started to develop my leaf drawings as I want to include a circle of leaves around the woman so it looks like the leaves are protecting her. I decided to draw a verity of leaf shapes to get more of an idea of what I like the look of. I like the look of all the different leaves so I think I will experiment with what I like best with the image fully composed.

A bit of a problem

As I began sketching ideas for one of my album cover concepts i began to think that what I was drawing was familiar. I had a think and after a while I realised that I had seen something very similar in an Oliver Jeffers book. I had a look at his book 'The Great Paper Caper' to refresh my memory and what I was drawing was too familiar to use so I will have to have a think about how else I could execute this idea if I do decide to go through with it. It was so strange how the image I had previously seen must have sub concisely stuck in the back of my head.  I think that my concept of people living under the hills could still work if I changed the design of the pods that the people live in. I will have to have a play around and see how it goes. If it doesn't work out I have two other ideas that I am thinking about developing. Below are images of Oliver Jeffers book and my thumbnail sketches.

Creepy looking Self Portrait (messing around)

As we have to create a self portrait for a class zine i decided to draw my face with quite a loose style. I wanted to keep it kind of realistic i thought this would be a good place to start just to get to know how to draw my face before trying out any particular style. I think it worked out although the way i have done the shadows makes me look like i have whiskers (oopsy). Also my lips look strange because i was pulling a weird face in the original image that i was drawing from. I think that i like the idea of me pulling a strange face in the final image.

Overall i'm not crazy about this image but its only a rough starting point so i'm okay with that. Im  not sure how i am going to do my final self portrait but i will keep drawing myself in different ways then ill decide what i like best.

September 30th: Reportage

Today I went out on a few different locations and did some reportage drawing. Here are a few of my favourite sketches

I drew the view from outside of the window first. I experimented with using dots of ink for the leaves, I really like how it turned out because although it is one block colour the tree still looks like it has depth.

After university I went for a coffee in town. I didn't have my sketch book or a pen so I took some napkins and borrowed a pen from the man behind the counter. I decided to draw the tables and chairs outside then drew some from inside. The drawings aren't the best because i found it quite hard to draw on tissue paper. I still like these drawings though, I think they tell more of a story than the other drawings in my sketchbook.

Later on that night I went shopping in Asda and decided to draw as I was walking around. I just used biro pen in my sketch book. I actually like how it looks because I think it shows the fast movement that is often found in a supermarket.

September 30th: Life drawing

Today we had a nude model come in and pose for a life drawing session. I used a lot of different techniques, for example I used my left hand for a few drawings and didn't look at the page for some.i also tried not taking my pen off the page and covering one eye to draw. I really enjoyed doing these things because it made it a lot more interesting and fun rather than just sitting and drawing. I really enjoyed the session below are some of the drawings that I created from it.

Two colour

Woman's body with someone else's head (Dans)

Continuous line drawing

Half drawn with left hand half drawn with right hand

29 th September: Drive to Hinderwell

Yesterday I went on a drive to see my aunty in Hinderwell (near Whitby.) The drive is really pretty and scenic I took advantage of this and did a few quick sketches of the passing countryside and roads. When I returned home I worked into a few of the sketches and added colour, I experimented with water colour and coloured pencils. I like the look of water colour more than I like the coloured pencil because it looks a lot more natural. I also decided to take the image that I drew of the inside of the car and use cooking oil to make the window transparent so the road drawing from the next page would show through. I think this worked really well.

24th September: Drawing at the beach

We went to a small beach behind Hartlepool Marina. The day wasn't that nice because it was really foggy but it gave the beach a really creepy look which i liked. The beach also had a strange coating of what looked like black snow this made the scene even more weird. I took a photo and did a few drawings. I think using the charcoal all over the page worked really nice as it gave a good fog effect. I also used a few other things to draw with such as Biro's and coloured felt tips. below is a photograph and a few sketches that i liked

23 rd September: Burlesque dancer

We had a burlesque dancer come in and do some modelling so we could do some life drawing. I had a fun time drawing the fun outfit that she was wearing. I used a wide range of media from ink to crayons, i also experimented with some left handed drawings. I think that i actually like the left handed ones more than the right handed ones because they have a more fun unique look to them. Once i had done my quick life drawings I took them back to the studio and worked into a few of them. I have posted a few of the drawings from it below.

Reportage artist research: Dominick Santise

As I continued with my research I found an artist named Dominick Santise. I likedhis drawings because they arent perfect but they still tell a story and set the mood of what is happening in the image. I really liked his drawing of the white house the bold black lines and the leafless trees give it a bit of an eery feel buti like that about it. One of his other images caught my eye and the reason I like this image is because you can really feel the motion in the image with the way he has smudged the lines to make the flags look likey they are being shuck by the people.

Cat sketches

I thought I'd get a head start with my university work so I got this tiny sketch book and decided to do a few loose quick sketches of my cats!
Not the most amazing drawings in the world but im trying to improve on drawing faster
